How to use colour therapy with your cat

In this blog, Julie-Anne Heart, of Naturally Cats, shares with us how to use colour therapy to support the health and well-being of your feline friend.

What is colour therapy?

Many years ago, as I was completing my training in chakras and auric therapy, I started thinking about how to use the chakra colours to help my ex-feral, anxious cat, Leo. A cat lying on a bed next to a yellow shirt

There had to be a way to support his chakras that could also give him autonomy over his health and current emotional state.

As I walked into my bedroom I saw him sitting next to a yellow top I had left on the bed! And it was like a little bolt of lightning hit me … I could offer him healing via colour therapy.

I had no idea at this time that colour therapy aka chromotherapy had been around for decades!

Chromotherapy aka colour therapy is the modality of using the frequency of each colour to support the body, mind and spirit. It is incredibly simple yet highly effective and doesn’t take much effort on your part! You just need to find distinct colours to offer to your cat, and they will do the rest.

How do colours relate to chakras?

Let me share a little about what chakras are so you can understand how colour therapy works. Chakras are the body's core energy centres, and they impact the cat's health, well-being, mental, emotional and spiritual state. They are affected by the cat's internal world and their external exposure. Each chakra vibrates at its own frequency and has its own colour associated with it.

Here’s a brief breakdown:

When a cat is working with colour therapy they are using the unique frequency of a colour to help themselves to heal. For example here you can see Walker using the purple fabric to balance his crown chakra – which is common in older cats as they can become too anchored into the pain of their physical body as they age.

Why should I use colour therapy?

When you offer your cat colour therapy you are giving your cat autonomy over their healing and wellness. You are giving your cat a voice by giving them a choice. It also helps to deepen the bond and connection you share as you are demonstrating to your cat that you recognize they have energetic needs.

Colour therapy offers the cat to heal in ways that only they know what they need. For example you don’t know if I want to go for a walk or get snuggled on the sofa with a box set! Cats are sentient, sensitive beings and if we give them the option to heal, they will take it gladly.

Colour therapy is a really simple yet immensely powerful modality that we can use to support our beloved cats. You just need to find the colours and put them down, your cat will do the rest!

How to offer colour therapy?

Offering colour therapy couldn’t be easier. Go through your cupboards and see what colours you have. I use the seven main chakra colours – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. You can put down pens, coloured paper, scarves, t-shirts, jumpers, anything you can get your hands on that provides a range of colours.

Some people offer multiple colours at one time for example using rainbow fabric. If you do this, be sure that your offering has big enough spaces for the cat to choose one colour if they wish. Working with all the colours at once could be intense for some cats, so I prefer to offer individual colours so the cat can choose.

What are the benefits of colour therapy?

When the cat is working with a specific colour the energy of that colour will be helping them to either clear, cleanse, charge or balance their chakra.

So a cat that may have been vomiting or having digestion issues like Arwen in this picture, is likely to lie on, sit near, sleep on or next to yellow fabric (or whatever medium you are using) to support the solar plexus, the chakra associated with the stomach.

Colour therapy can help to support physical issues such as reducing pain and inflammation. It can also support the cat's emotional health by reducing anxiety, stress, or overwhelm. And helps with mental health challenges such as anxiety and aggression.

Do’s and don’ts for using colour therapy:

DO:

  • Put the colour in places that smell like you (it will provide emotional support to the cat whilst they are healing)

  • Put no more than 2-3 colours in one place, a little distance apart

  • Have individual colours. Rainbow fabric is great, but the cat may not want to work with all chakras at the same time.

DON’T:

  • Put the colour near litter trays or feeding stations

  • Put it on existing, established cat beds

  • Have all the colours in one place

How will I know my cat is working with the colour?

Some cats may take a while to lean into the healing of colour therapy. As predator and prey animals it can take some cats a while to feel vulnerable and safe enough to work with the colour, so be patient. Others will jump straight onto it!

A cat may sit on, near or next to the colour. Again this comes back to the cat knowing what they need, which is also why we don’t force any colour on them by adding it to cat beds. Some cats may sit, sleep or play with the colour, trust that they are doing what they need to.

We have colour down all the time and my boys love it! I got fabric from a craft shop that is easily washable and durable.
