According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this time of year is ruled by Earth, which is ruled by the Spleen and Stomach systems. Earth individuals tend to be happy, like friendships, and want everyone around them to be happy. These pets want to snuggle and make you feel loved.
Earth individuals tend to have a yellow coat and might be prone to obesity. They also will be plagued by digestive issues when their system is out of balance or they suffer stress. Feeding some cooked root vegetables can help get their digestive tract back in order. A small amount of beets can help decrease inflammation and lower blood pressure. Antioxidants and vitamins in carrots help decrease heart disease and inflammation. Turnips are draining and decrease swelling. I add a lot of these vegetables to the fall stews I make for my dogs and my family as the weather gets cooler.

We decided it was time to bake cookies for the dogs too, since they deserve to have some fun of their own. We made cookies that would not only offer the dogs a treat, but also provide health benefits as well. (But you don't have to tell them they're eating something that's good for them!)
Ingredients:
3/4 cup organic coconut flour
1/4 cup organic sunflower butter
2 organic eggs
1/4 cup organic coconut oil
1/2 cup organic canned pumpkin
1 Tbsp Green Juju Just Greens
Ingredients:
3/4 cup organic coconut flour
1/4 cup almond butter (substitute with sesame or sunflower if allergic to nuts)
2 organic eggs
1/4 cup organic coconut oil
1/2 cup organic canned pumpkin
1 Tbsp organic Ceylon cinnamon
Instructions (for both):
Generally, we make food in large batches so we don't have to cook every day. I like to use the slow cooker or bake large pans of loaf-type food. This doesn't always work so well for kitties.
Our old kitty, Star, loved cooked chicken thighs or fresh-baked fish. She didn't love leftover chicken thighs or fish. She had Hue pretty well trained to cook something for her every few days.
Making food for cats should be balanced with the correct amounts of vitamins and minerals, just as for dogs. Cats are obligate carnivores and their diets should have a higher meat content than their canine counterparts. I love raw-feeding for my kitties, but not all cats will eat raw food. They do like their food served warm (body temperature, just like fresh-killed prey).
Most cats will eat about 4-6 ounces per day, depending on the fat content in the diet.

A few years ago we bought a small dehydrator, thinking it would save time and effort. It now sits in the back basement collecting dust. I've just found it easier to put a tray in the oven while I'm working in the kitchen or office. Here's my favorite recipe:

Over the years I have made many versions of PupLoaf. The latest version was designed to eliminate the need for a lot of costly supplements and allow you to balance the diet with whole foods.
